Try Making Filipino Maki Using Mrs. Lam’s Rice

Got another product to review. I'm so glad that there are lots of people and brands who trusted me to review their products. Last weekend, I received a package from Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus and I love it. The freshness and the flavorful boneless milkfish of Sarangani Bay.

A few days ago, I got the Mrs. Lam Premium Sinandomeng Special Rice. Thinking I should try it making my Filipino Maki again. Actually, this is not the first time that I use Sinandomeng rice in making my very special Maki. However, this the first time I will try Mrs. Lam Premium Sinandomeng rice.

Let's get it on, first, I prepared all the ingredients that I will need. What are those? Check out below.

Ingredients:

1 cup of Mrs. Lam's Premium Sinandomeng Special Rice
Smoked fish (I use the Sarangani Bay Smoked since it was included in the other package I got last weekend)
1 ripe mango
2 red Tomato
1 Salted Egg
Nori wrapper (seaweed wrapper)

Procedure:

Cook the rice and put it in a bowl. Then, arrange all the ingredients in the bamboo mat with plastic wrap. Placing the Nori first and followed by Mrs. Lam's Premium Sinandomeng Special Rice. Next, place the tomato, mango, salted egg, and smoked fish on top of rice. Once it was done, roll the bamboo mat and cut the Maki in 1 inch thick. Repeat the procedure until finish all the remaining ingredients. Serve warm with soy sauce and wasabi.

The original California Maki uses Japanese rice with rice vinegar, sugar and salt. My version doesn't have rice vinegar, sugar and salt because of the ripe mango, salted egg and smoked fish give its own distinctive taste that complements with the Mrs. Lam’s Premium Sinandomeng Special Rice. I like the texture of the rice not too gritty. It stays in place and holds the other ingredients. Perfect to use in making Maki, Sushi or Sashimi.

I rarely cook at home because husband used to prepare it for us. And if you're asking me, how was the Filipino Maki I created? I'm telling you that it really tastes so good because my office mates eat it all.

Next time, I will try to cook more using Mrs. Lam's Premium Special Rice. Perhaps, my favorite paella. What do you think?

By the way, to give some background about Mrs. Lam's Rice. It is available at leading supermarkets and can be sold in 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50kg packed but also sold on a per kg basis.

Mrs. Lam's rice has many varieties of locally milled rice from the fragrant Dinorado Special, Whole Grain Sinandomeng, Long Grain, Sinandomeng Special, Sinandomeng , Laon (old crop),  Organic Red, Organic Brown rice to the imported ones like Japanese and Thai Jasmine.

The newest endorser of the product is Danica Sotto-Pingris who recommends the fragrant Dinorado Special or Sinandomeng Rice for special occasions or if you want to impress your visitors, you can go for the Thai Jasmine rice or the short grain Japanese variety rice.

Mrs. Lam's rice is freshly milled, you can keep it for 1-2 months provided it was stored in a cool dry place with proper ventilation. To avoid weevil growth, the rice bins or containers should be properly emptied, cleaned and dried after each replenishment.

Mrs. Lam's Rice is distributed in the Philippines by ECT Enterprises based in Malaking Ambling, Magdalena, Laguna and is available in most major supermarkets and groceries. For details, call 0922-8388365 or email ectent@yahoo.com.

Finally Found The Best Boneless Milkfish With Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus

One of the best part of food review is that you get the products straight to your doorsteps. I was actually super excited to try the Sarangani Bay products. It was perfect since I am now practicing eliminating eating pork for about three months now.

To give you a background of what kind of fish I eat. Well, I love those fishes who has white and pink meat. Those who don't have many fish bones. However, when you say Bangus or Milkfish, it’s love because of  its tasty meat specially if it’s fresh and boneless.

I used to buy boneless Daing na Bangus at the Market. I love marinating it in vinegar and garlic before frying it.

Going back to Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus, as I mentioned a while ago. I am so thrilled to try it. My husband, who is our cook and owns the kitchen prepare some delectable dish last weekend using the Boneless Milkfish Belly. He cooked Sinigang na Bangus sa Talbos ng Kamote.

The dish was very nutritious, since it has fish and vegetables.  It was his first time to try cooking Sinigang sa Talbos ng Kamote but he makes it well. Yum!
We also tried the Marinated Baby Milkfish and the Boneless Milkfish Smoked which is now my favorite. I love the freshness and the smoky flavor of the fish. I now enjoy eating Milkfish because there is a product like Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus. You will forget other processed fish in the market after you try eating the Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus!

Actually, Sarangani Bay is so generous for sending us their products. We still have more to try like the Spicy Marinated Baby Milkfish, Boneless Milkfish in marinated and unseasoned. I even encourage my husband to join their contest, for sure he can innovate more dishes using the Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus.

For me, Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus is one of the best fish processed products that I have tasted. One thing I love with their product is that they are all vacuum sealed and you know that it was handled well. That way you have the guarantee that they keep it fresh, clean and delicious before you serve it on. I will definitely include it on my list and recommend it to my friends and family.  I just hope that we can buy it on supermarket for more convenience.

To give you a short knowledge about Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus, it is derived from the Sarangani Bay located in Southern Mindanao. Its clean and fresh water bred by  the Alsons Aquaculture Corporation who is the only integrated farm to market fish processing operations in the country.

They commercially packaged frozen fish by practicing the cold chain management to maintain the Sarangani Bay Premium Bangus quality. They are the most trusted and the largest in the country and they are exported abroad to countries like the United States, Canada, Guam, Australia, China and Middle East.

Pierce Brosnan’s Newest Movie Tech Thriller I.T.

It seems that even without “Q” it seems like suave Bond actor Pierce Brosnan has his fill of the latest high-tech contraptions as he stars in his latest movie project, I.T. The problem is, unlike his 007 gear, that technology has been harnessed to harm him and his family.

Mike Regan, played by Brosnan, a successful businessman living a quiet and comfortable existence, secured in the knowledge that this life is running smoothly because of all the gadgets that are installed in his office, home, and even the private aircraft that his empire is based on. This is disrupted when a talented I.T. specialist crashes into his life.

Ed Porter (Frecheville) has the mad skills to fix any Information Technology bugs and Regan first hails him as a savior when he encounters a computer glitch, but soon ends up fearing for his life as the tech geek starts going on a destructive path. Among the gear he uses to stalk Regan’s family and cause them harm are those that they use and rely on every day such as home security cameras, computers, and even cell phones.

As Porter becomes hell-bent on taking over Regan’s life by using tech as a tool to sow terror, moviegoers are made to reflect on how dependent modern life has become on gadgets and how these may eventually lead to humanity’s undoing.

Brosnan and Porter are joined by a diverse cast of American and British actors, notably Anna Friel (as Kathleen Regan) of Pushing Daisies, Insidious and Disney’s A.N.T. Farm actress Stephanie Scott (as Nancy Regan) and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol villain Michael Nyqvist.

Taylor Swift fans are also in for a treat, as the pop idol’s good-looking younger brother Austin Swift is also in the cast of the upcoming technology thriller as Lance. Austin first caught online attention on the red carpet during the premiere of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie.

He recently posted a movie still of his scene in I.T. on instagram, captioning it "Grew up loving Pierce Brosnan and [Director] John Moore's films. I never could've dreamt I would actually get the chance to work with them.” Taylor also posted a photo on her instagram, with Austin in character, and said, “My brother @austinkingsleyswift just acted in his first movie and I'm all proud and stuff.”

I.T. is set to show in Philippine cinemas on September 28, 2016. The movie is exclusively distributed by Octoarts Films International.

Check out the official I.T. Trailer below:

Spending A Night With Sumptuous Dinner At Papa John's Pizza

One of our family's favorite food is pizza. We like both thin and thick pizza, of course we love to try out different flavors.

We usually eat in a pizza house more often. My kid best ever favorite is Hawaiian and four cheese pizza. I don't like those who have a lot of veggie toppings.

Every movie night we love eating in the nearby food house near the cinema so we usually end up either Jollibee or Papa John's.

Did I mention Papa John's? Guess what? I was invited for a food test last week and they served sumptuous food. It was started with their appetizers, the Pepperocini Dynamite and Ultimate Potato Wedges. I love the Ultimate Potato Wedges, it was sweet and kinda peppery but complement it taste with the cheese and garlic mayo dressing while the Pepperocini Dynamite was not too appealing to me, because I am not a fun of spicy food and I am telling you that it's not best for kids unless they want to. I think, it's best served with beers.

We also tried the Vegetable Stromboli, it's a baked pastry with cheese and spinach wrapped in soft bread. It tastes good. However, it's not on the menu at the moment.

They also served pastas, I tried the Cheessy Mushroom and Spinach Alfredo, both tasty. My favorite is the Cheesy Mushroom which reminds me of Mac & Cheese although they served Spaghetti pasta with mushroom. One thing that I notice to their food is that you will taste that it was really fresh compare to other restaurants.

Then, the Fried Chicken Goodness was served. Oh! My Goodness! It was so crunchy. This American style crispy fried chicken was coated with flavorful spices and herbs. It’s crispy on the outside while juicy on the inside. In fairness their gravy, really is so tasty.

Finally, the much awaited menu for the night. The pizzas that were going to try. They served three flavors such as the classic Pepperoni, Super Papa, and Chicken Bacon Ranch.

Whenever we visit Papa John's we always ordered the Chicken Bacon Ranch that comes in 9 inch, 12 inch and 14 inch sizes. Papa John's pizza was so generous when serving its premium pizza with its meat, bacon and mozzarella cheese.

Their Super Papa is the ultimate combination of flavorful pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, mushroom, onions, green peppers and black olives. The combination of protein and the veggies are totally perfect!

As I was saying, the Chicken Bacon Ranch was heard in my family that is why I took a two slice of it during the Papa John's Bloggers Night. I definitely recommend it to all my friends.

Oh! Like the vegetable Stromboli, they also served us the Pineapple Cinnamon Rolls as our dessert. It melts my heart and this one is also my favorite for that night. The sweet flavor of caramel and the kick of cinnamon was totally a memorable which I look forward to see it on their menu soon and definitely become one of the popular.

The delightful flavors of the Papa John's menu were absolutely delish. Try to experience what I'm talking about here and don't just take my word. Visit Papa John's Pizza near you. Check out their Philippine branches below:

The Country's First Ever Matcha Festival At Newport Mall in RWM

The matcha mania in the Philippines never stop. As we can experience the launch of the first matcha-themed food festival at the Newport Mall in Resorts World Manila. This whole month of September, Resorts World Manila signature restaurants and selected Newport Mall, dining establishments will give you a Matcha spin on classic recipes that will guarantee you to taste and maximized the flavor of the healthiest forms of green tea called Matcha.

Matcha originates in Japan as a powdered green tea and become popular around the world because of its complex flavors and detoxifying health benefits that it can give. Matcha also use in other recipes from desserts to savory rice meals. To meet the Filipino's matcha cravings, Newport Mall is setting the stage for the Matcha Festival.

I was so excited when I got the invitation to try different foods to matcha in their recipes. I am one of the guests who first tried the sweet desserts and tasty food concoctions created by Impression, Ginzadon, Prosperity Court, Cafe Maxims, and Franks as well as the matcha recipe from Bulgogi Brothers, Mr. Kurosawa, Johnny Kahuku, TWG, Kettle, and many more.

I have tried the Matcha Overload by Impression, it has green tea gelato, matcha cannele, kouignette with matcha and red bean macaron. Then the Perfect Matcha, which is the combination of fluffy Green Tea Choco Almond Croissant  filled with dark chocolate and almond flakes, and hot Green Tea Latte by Cafe Maxims.

Next is the Matchadog, who is an Asian twist of Frank Inasal Sausage topped with matcha dressing, nori and more by Franks. Actually, this Matchadog is my favorite and I never thought that matcha is can be used as a dressing for a sausage sandwich would give you a true taste of goodness in every bite you have.

I also tried the Matcha Crumbles by Prosperity Court and the Guaca Matcha Sansrival by Johnny Kahuku, both taste good too. The Guaca Matcha Sansrival is my second favorite during the food tasting and it was a layered butter avocado cake with cashew merengue and japanese matcha frosting, although it was kinda sweet but I think it can be a perfect match with coffee or hot tea.

Actually, I arrived late, so I did not have the chance to try the first part of food tasting that they served but it’s okay. Even if I did try it all, I do enjoy the rest of the food at the Matcha Festival.

By the way, there is also a Matcha Art Exhibit at the ground floor and the specialty market where you can buy matcha flavored goodies, treats and other products available for purchase at the 2nd floor until September 30.

For more information about the country's first ever matcha festival at Newport Mall, you can call Megaworld Lifestyle Malls Concierge at 709-9888, 709-0888, 0917-8380111 or contact Resorts World Manila Tourist/Visitors Hotline at 908-8833. Our Role To Ensure The Balance Of Our Marine Ecosystem

Our country is surrounded of water and no wonder why we are rich when it comes to marine life. There are many new discoveries about new fishes, sharks and rays but the government did not notice the potential of these species to be found.

Because there are big groups of sharks that can be found in the Philippine waters and most of them can be categorized to be threatened because of lack of knowledge of the people. They sometimes catch those to be killed, finned and legally sold elsewhere.

Upon continue doing this over and over again, it will result to be into a sad reality that our Marine Biodiversity is ended its life. Once the food chain was cut, the rest of the world who has life will be in danger too.

One of them the species that I'm talking about is the Thresher Shark?

Perhaps, you are wondering, what is Thresher Shark? And if you are going to ask me if it is some kind of a shoe brand, a shampoo or  a new gaming app that you can download.  I am telling you that it's not.

Although I am not a Marine Biologist or an expert when it comes to Marine Biodiversity,  I will share with you some things I've learned about Marine life.

I have some brain food here in store for you to understand what I am talking about.

In the Philippines, we have three kinds of Thresher Sharks, the Big-eye Thresher,  who has a big eyes that almost covers its whole head, the not so common - Common Thresher and the Pelagic Thresher who is the most prominent to our marine bio-diversity, also known as Alopias Pelagicus.

Photo taken by Noel Guevara in Monad Shoal, Malapascua.
As a matter of fact, the Philippines is the only country with an established Pelagic Thresher shark SCUBA diving industry (see how amazing we have right now). Divers can see and observe the pelagic thresher sharks on a daily basis at Monad Shoal, Malapascua Island in Northern Cebu. They always visit the area to get cleaned of parasites and sometimes to be the ground for pupping. The best time to experience and witness the Pelagic Thresher Shark is around 5:00-5:30 AM as per Sir AA who nurture us more about this shark during the briefing last night.

Malapascua Island, turned to be a major dive tourist attraction and the countries first shark and ray sanctuary. It provides employment, livelihood opportunities for locals and also helps them to recover after the devastation of the typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

Photo taken by Noel Guevara in Monad Shoal, Malapascua.
The provinces of Batangas City, Palawan, Bohol and Cebu are the few provinces who protects them. Unfortunately, they can still be killed, finned, and traded legally. Their meat is usually consumed locally to produce fish balls while their fins are sold internationally, mainly through Hong Kong and Taiwan which they use in shark fin soup.

Sad to say, it was happening right now.  Dried shark fins can fetch up to PHP 8, 000 per kilo, depending on their size and type while the meat are can be sold for PHP 40 per kilo. Sadly, the sharks grow slowly, mature late, and produce few young over longer lifetimes and more than half of the population of shark and ray species are threatened or near on its extinction due to over fishing.

The good news is that, there is an opportunity coming up to ensure the protection of these sharks through the regulation of its international trade that will be happening on September 24 to October 25 this year.

As the Philippines’ CITES Management Authority for aquatic  and marine species, the BFAR has the option to say YES or NO to the listing of thresher sharks. We need to let them know that we want our thresher sharks to be protected under CITES will inevitably protect them in Philippine waters if the CITES Proposal was pass.

We need the thresher shark to be included in the list of protected marine species. The proposal needs to pass to ensure their survival for generations to come.  So friends, join me in this advocacy in pushing for the protection of thresher sharks.  Let’s shout out to have a vote for YES.

You can help make this happen by doing the following:

1.       Signing our petition, PHILIPPINES VOTE YES FOR THRESHERS.

2.       Writing to BFAR Director Gongona, 3/F PCA Bldg., Elliptical Road, Diliman, Quezon City) to convince them to vote YES!

3.       Visiting Malapascua Island to see the thresher shark and support the community.

4.       Sharing our thresher shark posts on your social media while using #SaveThresherTala #StoptheThresherHunt #PHsayYes

I remember my Biology class during High School. My teacher says that all living things have life and everyone of us is interconnected to each other. I believe that everything in this world should have balance because that how's life worked.

It's like a yin and yang, right and left, and up and down sort of thing where you able to have the harmonious effect of what we have around us.  So, let’s keep it balanced!

I don’t usually ask a favor to anyone, but I guarantee you that supporting me and the Marine Wildife Watch of the Philippines campaign with this advocacy is truly a worth fighting for. For us to be able to continue the opportunity to see pelagic thresher shark up close in Monad Shoal, to remain as the preeminent destination that helps our tourism and to support the Daanbantayan’s diving industry. Hoping that you also have a big heart when it comes to caring and protecting our environment.
